The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA), will conduct the annual National Fiber Crops Summit on Nov. 14 to discuss possible solutions to several challenges facing the fiber crop industry.

The National Fiber Crops Summit, with the theme “HIBLA BIDA!!!!,” will be held at the DA-BSWM Convention Hall in Diliman, Quezon City, Communication Secretary Cheloy Garafil said in a statement on Thursday.

Garafil said the summit would focus on priority fiber crops, among them abaca, cotton, piña, salago, and silk.

“‘HIBLA BIDA!!!’ embodies the ideas that these fiber crops are not only intrinsic to the nation’s heritage but also integral to its future economic viability, competitiveness, and sustainability,” she said.

“Aside from critical discussion on issues in the industry, such as fiber quality, market demand, and trade regulations, the summit will also serve as a platform to exhibit a diverse array of products derived from priority fiber crops.”

Garafil said a highlight of the summit is a Fashion Show featuring Filipino designer Maria Fernandina Sandico, who is renowned for her use of abaca, cotton, and nipa as materials for creating exquisite pieces of clothing.

PhilFIDA said it is committed to driving innovation, growth, and prosperity within the fiber crop sector.

It added that its vision is encapsulated by this year’s theme, signifying the importance and centrality of fiber crops in the Philippines economic and agricultural landscape.

“Join us as we bring together a diverse assembly of government luminaries, industry visionaries, and experts. Together, we’ll chart strategies, brainstorm innovations, and outline policies that promise to supercharge our nation’s fiber crop industry, foster productivity and competitiveness, and thrive on the commitment and support of all stakeholders,” PhilFIDA said.

PhilFIDA is mandated to promote the growth and development of the natural fiber industry through research and development; production support; extension support, education and training services; fiber processing and utilization; and standards implementation and trade regulation. (PNA)
