The municipal government of Bani has received PHP1 million for the rehabilitation of the Bangrin pavilion at the mangrove marine protected area as initial cash prize after winning the Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan: Search for Most Outstanding Coastal Community in the Ilocos Region, organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Municipal agriculturist Jeffrey Pamo, in an interview on Thursday, said the pavilion will serve as a viewing area of the around 40-hectare mangrove plantation where they could also conduct the “nature and lecture” sessions as well as bird watching.

“Marine protected areas are a way to encourage others for the protection and preservation of the environment,” he said.

Pamo added the municipality plans to expand its mangrove plantation, further enhancing the area as a sanctuary for fish and migratory birds.

Additionally, the remaining PHP1 million from their total PHP2 million cash prize will be allocated to coral protection and seaweed production development.

“The fisherfolk in the town would always want to sail despite dangerous weathers so we thought of introducing seaweed production so they would have alternative livelihood even for their wives during weather disturbance season,” Pamo said in Filipino.

The town’s cash prize for winning first runner-up in the same contest in 2022 worth PHP1 million was utilized for livelihood program and fishing materials such as fish coolers and fish nets among others, he added.

Bani’s championship win in 2023 was attributed to its comprehensive marine protection programs, which focus on maintaining the marine protected areas, law enforcement, and community development, which involves the communities in the programs of the local government unit.

“One of our key programs is mangrove planting and maintenance of marine protected areas. We plant seedlings with the local communities, ensuring long-term sustainability,” Pamo said.

Mayor Facundo Palafox Jr. remains committed to environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of a balanced ecosystem for future generations.

Meanwhile, BFAR Ilocos Region Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan lauded the winners for their dedication to sustainable fisheries management.

“May their achievements inspire other coastal communities to embrace responsible and sustainable fishing practices,” she said in a statement. (PNA)
