In 1989, an Australian missionary named Jacqueline Hamill was killed during a hostage-taking incident in Davao City. She was reportedly raped at knifepoint and later died due to a gunshot wound. Duterte spoke of his take on the incident during a campaign rally in the lead up to the 2016 elections. He was mayor of Davao City at the time of the incident.
