Filipina tennis star Alex Eala captured her first career WTA Tour singles title after defeating top seed and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the championship final of the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. The victory makes the 21-year-old athlete the first tennis player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles title, marking an unprecedented milestone for Philippine sports.

The championship final was extended across two days due to heavy downpours and severe weather while disrupted the scheduling at the venue. Rain and lightning suspended play on Sunday while Pegula held a 6-4, 1-2 advantage, forcing tournament officials to push the remainder of the contest to Monday afternoon. Following the match, Pegula acknowledged that the split conditions affected the overall dynamic, stating that the two separate matches definitely felt different on court.

Dominant Comeback And High Fan Engagement

When the game resumed on Monday, Eala quickly asserted control and dictated the pace of the game with aggressive baseline rallies. After securing a decisive break in the tenth game of the second set to level the match, Eala elevated her play in the decider, winning six consecutive games to complete a sweep of the third set. Over the course of the match, Eala converted five of nine break-point opportunities and recorded an 84.4 percent win rate on her first serves.

The tournament generated a lot of interest centered around the Filipina contender, with organizers indicating that roughly 80 percent of ticket inquiries and sales specifically requested Eala’s matches. A vocal crowd of supporters, including prominent members of the local Filipino community, filled the venue to cheer her on across both days of the final.

Career Milestone And Tournament Run

In a speech after the trophy presentation, Eala showed gratitude for her breakthrough plays on the professional circuit. She stated that winning a WTA 500 event was insane and represented an incredible milestone for her personal career, sharing that she never thought she would be holding a trophy right now and would hold these memories close to her.

Eala reached her maiden WTA 500 final by navigating through a very difficult tournament draw that included victories over multiple top players such as former Grand Slam winners Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, and the defending champion Leylah Fernandez. The Washington victory marks Eala’s seventh win against a top-10 ranked opponent during the 2026 tour season and is most likely projected to lift her into the top 20 of the WTA world rankings.
