The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 5 (Bicol) has begun the regionwide payout for its food and water security initiative, providing cash assistance to beneficiaries who completed livelihood and community-based activities under Project LAWA and BINHI.

DSWD-5 Disaster Response Management Division Chief Claudio Villareal said the payout started in Daraga, Albay on Wednesday, with 200 partner-beneficiaries from barangays Peñafrancia, Anislag, Maopi, and Bigao receiving PHP8,700 each after completing the program’s 20-day Cash-for-Training and Cash-for-Work activities. An ongoing payout is being conducted in Tabaco City with the same number of beneficiaries.

The 9,000 beneficiaries come from 30 municipalities and cities across Bicol’s six provinces, with the payout expected to be completed by July 13. The DSWD-5 has allocated PHP78.3 million for the project.

Project LAWA at BINHI is among DSWD’s key interventions designed to help vulnerable communities improve food production while enhancing their capacity to adapt to climate change and other environmental challenges.

DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio said the project aims to empower communities by providing opportunities that promote self-sufficiency and resilience while encouraging active participation in food production initiatives.

“The initiative supports the national government’s efforts to strengthen food security and improve the welfare of Filipino families through community-driven and sustainable development programs,” he said.

The DSWD said Project LAWA at BINHI reflects the administration’s commitment to building stronger and more resilient communities through programs that address both economic and environmental concerns. (PNA)
