The Philippines has once again been voted to sit in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council, cementing the country’s involvement in the development of the world’s digital future.
In a statement on Tuesday, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy said the country has been reelected to sit among the 48 member states in the ITU council from 2023 to 2026.
The ITU has a total of 193 members.
“As a country, we are very eager to take active part in building a better digital future for all as our commitment under the Bucharest Declaration,” Uy said.
The seat in the ITU Council, he said, will allow the DICT to lead the country’s involvement in discussions and decisions “that will significantly shape the future of the world.”
“We will need the full support and collaboration of all departments of government and Congress to achieve our goals. Thank you to everyone who helped us achieve this milestone,” he said.
He said the DICT will work with both the public and private sectors to attain a “digitally-empowered Philippines.”
The country is among the 13 states selected from Asia and Australia to sit in the council, along with Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.
DICT Undersecretary Jocelle E. Batapa-Sigue assisted in the country’s successful bid in the re-election and will represent the Philippines until the end of the plenipotentiary conference on Oct.14. (PNA)
