The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) distributed on Monday PHP1.46 million worth of medicines, equipment, and medical supplies to 23 towns in Eastern Samar province.

PCSO General Manager Royina Garma said the distribution of assistance is part of their goal to reach out to more local government units in the country.

“Majority of our funds intended for charity are for Universal Health Care, operations of Malasakit Centers, and help to government hospitals. Our aim is also to allocate some amount to help our local government units,” she said during the turnover at the Pacific Point here.

Beneficiary local governments are Arteche, Balangiga, Balangkayan, Borongan City, Can-avid, Dolores, General MacArthur, Giporlos, Guiuan, Hernani, Jipapad, Lawaan, Llorente, Maslog, Maydolong, Mercedes, Oras, Quinapondan, Salcedo, San Julian, San Policarpo, Sulat, and Taft.

Garma led the distribution of wheelchair, stretchers, face masks, face shields, gloves, personal protective equipment, and medicines to mayors and representatives from 23 towns in the province.

“We are here to fulfill the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to distribute charity funds for those who are in need,” she added.

Garma assured that despite 50-percent sales loss due to the pandemic this year, the PCSO will continue to provide funds for healthcare, especially with the increasing number of patients seeking medical attention amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation in the country.

The PCSO is mandated to set aside 30 percent of its revenue for charity, 55 percent for prizes, and 15 percent for its operation. (PNA)
