Gender-fair language is being promoted in government institutions in Northern Mindanao to maintain a professional and safe workplace culture.

Applying gender-fair language in communicating with peers and clientele is not only about choosing appropriate words but espousing an inclusive and safe environment among people with different gender orientations, lawyer Pauline Mae Araneta-Drilon said in a workshop led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 10 (Northern Mindanao).

“It is about transforming the way we think, act, and relate to one another. It is about creating a culture where respect is not optional, it is the norm,” she said.

DENR-10’s gender-fair language workshop is part of the observation of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children.

Drilon said communities play a role in helping uplift the respect and dignity in upholding gender-fair languages.

The agency joined other government agencies and local government units in the region, which also organized different activities.

In Camiguin province, the provincial government conducted a Psychological First Aid training for its stakeholders, while the Iligan City government also initiated a Gender and Development activity. (PNA)
