The municipal government of Villanueva in Misamis Oriental is planning to establish a Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility to manage hazardous waste, a move that can curb potential dangers to public health.

In an interview on Friday, city hall executive assistant Roy Pami said Mayor Julio Uy ordered the feasibility study on the facility’s development plan within its eight-hectare sanitary landfill in Barangay San Martin to help address the growing volume of hazardous medical waste generated by hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

“The proposed facility would be designed to process biomedical waste using specialized treatment equipment,” he said.

Pami said this will include an incinerator to destroy harmful microorganisms and reduce the risks associated with improper medical waste disposal.

The project was recently approved by the municipal council. The local government, on the other hand, continues to look for a construction partner to undertake the facility’s development.

The proposed facility, which could help address the biomedical waste management needs of the province’s other 22 municipalities, comes amid growing concerns over the increasing volume of hospital and medical waste generated in this city. (PNA)
