The Department of Public Works and Highways-Davao Region (DPWH-11) turned over a PHP46.6-million Regional Evacuation Center (REC) in Mati City, Davao Oriental on Friday, providing residents with a modern and disaster-resilient facility built to withstand natural calamities.

Located in Barangay Badas, the evacuation center’s site was selected based on safety recommendations from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, ensuring it sits on an elevation safe from potential tsunamis and flooding.

The facility now falls under the operational management of Mati’s local government, which will oversee its use during emergencies and community events.

Association of Barangay Councilors president Danny Macaubos, representing the Mati City government, highlighted the facility’s importance in supporting the city’s disaster readiness.

“The REC opening reinforces Mati City’s commitment to disaster preparedness and community resilience, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing the increasing frequency of natural disasters while supporting the community’s welfare,” Macaubos said.

The new center can accommodate up to 530 individuals or about 160 families, featuring a large open court that doubles as a recreational area and emergency shelter, giving it the look and functionality of a modern gymnasium.

Other key features include spacious bathrooms, a mess hall, a fully equipped kitchen, a clinic, a prayer room, and an administrative building. Additionally, a high-capacity water tank ensures a steady supply of water during emergencies.

DPWH-11 said the Mati REC is part of a larger regional project that aims to construct 18 similar centers across Davao to strengthen disaster response capabilities.

The multi-use design allows the center to serve as both a shelter during disasters and a community gathering space for recreational and local events during non-emergency periods. (PNA)
