A total of 2,956 public utility jeepney drivers received more than PHP14.7 million in cash relief assistance during the scheduled distribution from May 5 to 7, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 11 (Davao Region) said Friday.

DSWD-11 data sent to the Philippine News Agency showed 875 drivers claimed their aid on May 5, followed by 892 on May 6, and 1,189 on May 7 – the final day of payout at the Agdao Farmers Market function hall.

Records indicate that 373 identified beneficiaries have yet to claim their assistance, leaving PHP1.8 million unclaimed.

The agency targets 6,329 PUV drivers, including jeepney, taxi, bus, transport network vehicle services (TNVS), and delivery drivers, for the assistance.

Each qualified driver receives PHP5,000 under DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, a national initiative that cushions vulnerable transport workers against fuel price hikes triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.

The cash relief helps PUV drivers meet their families’ basic needs amid rising operational costs.

“To qualify for the grant, drivers must hold a valid permit and a professional driver’s license,” DSWD-11 reminded. (PNA)
