Creativity and environmental awareness took center stage Tuesday at SM City Laoag as local designers, students and stakeholders participated in an eco-fashion runway to promote sustainable fashion and responsible environmental practices.

The event showcased a variety of garments and accessories made from recycled, reusable, and environmentally friendly materials, demonstrating how discarded materials can be transformed into stylish and innovative fashion pieces.

Participants used fabric scraps and other recyclable items to create unique designs. Organized by the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) under the provincial government, the “Re-thread: Retazo Eco-Fashion Show Runway” provides a platform for local designers to reimagine scrap fabric as wearable art.

Joegie Jimenez, the environment program officer of ENRO Ilocos Norte, said the event is the highlight of this month’s environmental celebration, showcasing the creativity and resourcefulness of local designers in creating dresses from recyclable materials.

“All entries are crafted primarily from recycled, upcycled, or repurposed fabric,” Jimenez said, adding that the competition celebrates environmental stewardship, artistic ingenuity and the local creative community’s power to lead meaningful change.

The initiative also aligns with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ advocacy for recycling, sustainability and environmental awareness, while simultaneously uplifting the local creative industry.

Jimenez said sustainable fashion is an important part of the global effort to reduce pollution and promote responsible consumption.

He encouraged communities to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily lives and to support initiatives that help create a cleaner, healthier environment.

The eco-fashion runway concluded with awards honoring outstanding designs for creativity, originality, and effective use of recycled materials.

Organizers expressed hope that the event would inspire more people to embrace sustainable fashion and to play an active role in environmental conservation. (PNA)
