The Calasiao municipal government in Pangasinan distributed food products from its community pantry to over 10,000 marginalized families on Monday as part of this year’s town fiesta.

“Instead of merry-making activities like in the previous celebration, the local government, together with the department heads and barangay councils, decided to do a community pantry,” Mayor Patrick Caramat said in an interview on Monday.

He said the councils of the 24 villages chose 33 percent of the total population, mostly farmers, fisherfolk, solo parents, persons with disabilities, and families with children with special needs, from the marginalized sectors as recipients.

Each recipient received a reusable bag, in compliance with the no-plastic ordinance, containing products such as rice, vegetables, a choice of pork or chicken, eggs, milkfish, smoked fish, the one-town-one-product puto (steamed rice cake) and other native delicacies, and condiments.

The distribution started at 4 a.m.

Caramat said the products were purchased from the farmers and vendors at their public market, while the bags were made by a local manufacturer.

“Double purpose. We were able to help vendors, local producers, the transport sector and families in need from different sectors,” Caramat said.

Other town fiesta activities include a medical and dental mission, free circumcision, and free legal services. (PNA)
