I offer my share of resolutions and hopes for the new year to our country’s leaders.

For this I echo the wisdom of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, who recently invited me to lead their training session on “Strengthening Ground-Level Leadership: Developing Non-Officer Personnel as Frontline Leaders.”

I was truly impressed by their professionalism and genuine dedication to serving their stakeholders. Congratulations to JDIR Ruel S. Rivera, DSC, Chief of BJMP.

Special thanks to a good friend, National Senior Executive Jail Officer SJO4 Agnes Prieto, for encouraging me to take part in their 2nd Executive Senior Jail Officers Summit.

Resolutions for Leaders

According to the BJMP delegates:

Leaders lead with integrity, transparency, and compassion. Leadership is not only about authority or discipline. It is about caring for those entrusted to them. In organizations like the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, leadership is shown through action and example. Ranks or titles do not define leaders. Respect is earned through ethical conduct, accountability, and fairness.

Good leaders listen to their people. They value opinions and recognize sacrifices. They mentor and empower others. They create more leaders, not followers. This strengthens unity, commitment, and shared responsibility.

Leadership is not about position or power. It is about influence, service, and inspiration. True leaders listen first and act with empathy. They lead with consistency and integrity. They balance vision with action while guiding others through challenges.

Leadership is like being the captain of a ship. Leaders set the direction. They motivate the team. They face challenges with courage. They ensure everyone understands their role in reaching a common goal.

Leadership guides, motivates, and inspires people to work together. It goes beyond giving instructions or holding authority. It creates an environment where people feel valued, supported, and encouraged to grow.

Hopes for Leaders

According to the BJMP delegates:

There is hope for leaders in the Area of Responsibility in the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology. They should act with fairness in tasking, promotion, and welfare. They should support continuous training and professional growth. They should provide strong support for all programs.

There is a deep hope for leaders who listen attentively. They should value contributions in decision-making. They should lead with humility in success. They should show wisdom in challenges.

Above all, there is a desire for leaders who are role models. They should inspire through respect and integrity, not fear. They should embody the values they expect from their personnel. They should lead by example throughout their journey.

Leaders should inspire confidence in others. They should encourage belief in themselves. They should strengthen faith in the organization’s shared vision. Leadership should always seek the greater good.

Leaders should encourage open dialogue. They should create safe spaces for participation. They should practice active listening. They should promote shared decision-making. They should remain transparent and value diverse perspectives. They should empower ownership within teams. They should establish strong feedback systems for learning and improvement.

Ultimately, leadership should be rooted in honesty and compassion. It should be grounded in unity and respect. Leaders should inspire positive change. They should encourage collaboration. They should build a culture where people feel valued, supported, and able to reach their full potential together.
