The Iloilo Provincial Library and Archives brings its services to public schools through its outreach program, aimed at promoting literacy by enticing children to read.

“The library is conducting outreach to public schools in the province. So, we conduct storytelling and literacy activities to entice the kids to read,” Provincial Librarian Allana Delgado said in an interview on Tuesday.

She added that schools usually request for their services or sometimes, the office chooses the recipient schools.

Library staff conduct storytelling sessions and puppet shows to capture the attention of children.

“So, if they see the pictures in the stories and are fascinated with the stories, they will be more interested in picking up a book, reading stories and learning how to read,” Delgado said.

The provincial librarian said reading books expands one’s horizon as the reader gets immersed in the stories.

“Reading sharpens your mental skills, your focus, your concentration. A lot of people are saying they are not interested in reading, but sometimes it’s just that they can’t find yet the book that they (are fascinated with). Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding your interest,” she said.

This November, the provincial library is holding a donation drive, urging sharing of books “to bring joy and learning to young readers.”

“Your donations will reach schools, libraries, and organizations in need, helping to spark curiosity and a love for reading in our community,” read the campaign poster posted by the Iloilo Provincial Library and Archives on Facebook.

Those willing to donate can drop their books at donation boxes in Casa Real de Iloilo, the Iloilo Provincial Capitol building, or at the Provincial Library and Archives office. (PNA)
