A survey has shown that younger Filipino workers are inclined to have part-time jobs outside of their regular work to build their financial capacity at a young age.

According to Agile Data Solutions, Inc., a startup market research firm, 60 percent of its survey respondents have part-time jobs, majority are younger Filipinos.

The survey was done from July to September 2023 participated in by 1,000 Filipinos aged 18 and above through the Hustle PH app.

“We see an increasing number of Filipinos, particularly the younger generation, seeking part-time employment as a means to bolster their income and attain financial stability. This trend is further driven by the prevailing economic challenges and inflation, which reached 6.1 percent in September,” Agile Data Solutions chairman and chief executive officer Jason Gaguan said.

The survey revealed that those who are involved in side hustle are reportedly earning as much as PHP10,000 per month, and most of these part-timers are in Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and Central Luzon.

It also showed that men are more likely to juggle multiple part-time jobs, while women are likely to have a single sideline.

The survey, likewise, highlighted a shift in values and priorities among different generations.

Workers who are 18 to 25 years old, or belonging to the Gen Z group, prioritize financial independence, while older generations (41 to 60 years old) prioritize flexibility in working hours.

“This illustrates a willingness among Filipinos to exchange time for financial stability in their younger years. As individuals age, their focus tends to shift towards the importance of time and achieving a better work-life balance,” the startup noted.

Among the top part-time jobs of Filipino workers were virtual assistance, service crew, information technology, and sales.

The survey added that work-from-home arrangement emerges as the top preference for part-timers.

“Filipinos today aren’t just adapting to the digital age – they’re truly making the most of it. With all the new technology and online platforms out there, many are finding jobs that fit their preferences and skills. It’s a testament to the adaptability and spirit of the modern Filipino workforce,” Gaguan said. (PNA)
