The city government has released PHP7,941,000 for its 1,202 scholars for the second semester of School Year 2021-2022.

Ordinance 116-2019 provides for an education grant to poor but deserving students who are residents of Baguio City.

An amount of PHP6,000 is received by the student who undergoes an assessment by the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

The amount will be increased to PHP10,000 starting in 2023 as provided for in the amendment of the ordinance passed middle of 2022.

The PHP7,941,000 came up after the approval of the PHP220,000 additional fund for the 37 college education financial assistance grantees whose fund releases were late due to the late submission of requirements.

The PHP220,000, provided for under City Council Ordinance 63-2022, is in addition to the PHP7,719,000 earlier released for the education grant of 1,165 students for the same school year, acting City Mayor Faustino Olowan said on Friday.

Executive assistant to the mayor and in charge of the program, Leandro Tabilog, said among the requirements for the scholarship is a certificate of income of the parents from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, proof of residency in Baguio, and a voter’s certification of the parents or the applicant if the latter is of voting age.

The scholarship is also available to students taking up technical-vocational courses. (PNA)
