On October 13, the Vatican News announced the beatification of the late Italian Pope John Paul I.

Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of a decree advancing the cause for the beatification of Pope John Paul I — one of the procedures that will move him closer to sainthood.

The Church recognized Pope John Paul I for his miraculous healing of a young girl from Argentina who developed a severe case of acute encephalitis and life-threatening brain seizures.

According to the Congregation for Saints’ Causes website, experts said that there was no scientific explanation for the complete recovery of the young girl in 2011 and it could be attributed to the late pope’s intercession.

“The Smiling Pope” or Pope John Paul I origin name is Albino Luciani. He was born on October 17, 1912 in the northern Italian town of Canale d’Agordo. Luciani, only reigned for 33 days, headed the Church from August 26 until September 26 year 1978.

Before entering seminary, his father wrote to him stating, “I hope that when you become a priest, you will be on the side of the poor, because Christ was on their side.” Words that Luciani put into practice all his life.
As he is, Pope John Paul I known for his humbleness, signature smile, considered as the people’s pastor, a great communicator, and priest who is close to the poor and the workers.
