Filipino Olympian figure skater Michael Martinez will be returning to the skating rink after a three-year hiatus.

The two-time Winter Olympian will be one of three Filipinos competing in the fourth event of the 2021-22 Figure Skating Challenger Series at the Finlandia Trophy in Espoo, Finland, on October 7.

The Philippine Skating Union announced on their Facebook page that Martinez will be accompanied by Sofia Frank and Christopher Caluza representing our country in the said competition.

“Michael Martinez, Sofia Frank and Christopher Caluza represents the Philippines in the Finlandia Trophy in Espoo, Finland. The 2021 Finlandia Trophy is the fourth in a series of nine events of the 2021-22 Figure Skating Challenger Series happening this October 7-10, 2021. Good luck in your competitions, National Athletes. Laban Pilipinas!” the skating federation said.

Martinez has been consistently training overseas for the past few years since he was on hiatus after the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The 24-year-old skater was supposed to participate in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics at the recently concluded Nebelhorn Trophy, however, an unfortunate event happened that prevented him from getting another win.

Frank, on the other hand, did not miss her chance from participating in the Nebelhorn Trophy where she placed 24th and also won a bronze medal in the 2021 Colorado Springs Invitational.

Meanwhile, Caluza bagged a silver medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Livestream links of the Finlandia Trophy will be shared on the PHSU Facebook page once available.
