2. Madrid, Spain

The city of Madrid played a pivotal role in Rizal’s education and the development of his nationalist consciousness. He took up medicine at the Universidad de Madrid, wrote for La Solidaridad which was then based in Calle Atocha, and met with fellow ilustrados at Viva Madrid. In 1996, a replica of the Rizal Monument in Luneta Park was built at the corner of Avenida de las Islas Filipinas and Calle Santander. Coincidentally, this happens to be the last stop of the “Rizal’s Madrid Walking Tour” formulated by the Philippine Embassy in Madrid.
