4. Mother Teresa

Nun and missionary Mother Teresa was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. She moved to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto when she was 18. She then transferred to India where she changed her name to Mother Teresa, which is derived from the patron saint of missionaries, Thérèse of Lisieux.

In 1946, she claimed that God sent her a message to help out the poor. She devoted her life following God’s order to the point that sometimes she finds herself homeless.

The Catholic Church eventually learned about this and in 1950, the Missionaries of Charity was founded.

By 1996, the organization has already accomplished around 600 missions in over 100 countries. Despite not being in her best element, Mother Teresa continued to extend a helping hand to those in need.

Among her honors were a Nobel Peace Prize that she received in 1979 and being named as a saint by the Catholic Church.
