The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Bicol (DSWD-5) has distributed various forms of assistance to families affected by Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) in Catanduanes.

In a report on Friday, DSWD-5 Director Norman Laurio said cash assistance through the Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) program, along with food and non-food items, as well as hot meals, were provided to families in Barangay Tubli, Caramoran on Thursday.

A total of 528 affected families received PHP10,263 each, amounting to PHP5.4 million in cash assistance.

The relief effort included 816 food packs, 50 family kits, 20 sleeping kits, 20 kitchen kits, 10 water filtration kits, and two laminated sacks, along with hot meals provided to nearly 700 individuals.

Laurio was present on the ground to monitor the situation and offer strategic guidance to ensure the smooth delivery of various forms of assistance in Caramoran.

Elena Begim Solsona, 79, shared that her house was damaged, including the roof that was blown off by Uwan’s fierce winds and heavy rainfall.

“Thank you for the food pack, the kit, and the cash assistance I received. I will use the money to repair my roof so that I will be protected when it rains,” she said in the local dialect.

During his visit to Catanduanes on Thursday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. instructed all government agencies to ensure that assistance reaches all affected families as the island province recovers from the devastation caused by Uwan.

In total, DSWD Bicol has already provided PHP94 million worth of assistance to the six provinces in the region. (PNA)
