The Department of Tourism-Negros Island Region (DOT-NIR) has urged tourism stakeholders to take proactive measures in preparation for the impacts of very strong El Niño, which could bring warmer temperatures and below-normal rainfall across most parts of the country.

On Tuesday, the DOT-NIR issued an advisory addressed particularly to local government units (LGUs), tourism officers, tourism establishments, tourism workers, tour operators, tour guides and transport providers in Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Siquijor and Bacolod City.

It noted that a strong El Niño is “currently active and expected to intensify into a very strong El Niño between September and December 2026, potentially persisting through the first half of 2027.”

“These conditions may result in prolonged dry spells, drought, and water supply constraints, potentially affecting tourism facilities, destination management, visitor comfort, and the continuity of tourism-related services,” the DOT-NIR said.

Considering these potential impacts, the agency encouraged tourism stakeholders in Negros and Siquijor to implement preparedness measures.

The DOT-NIR told tourism establishments and enterprises to implement water conservation measures, assess water storage capacity and establish contingency measures for possible water supply interruptions, and adopt energy-efficient practices.

It advised tourism workers, tour operators and tour guides to inform guests of expected hot weather and encourage adequate hydration, appropriate clothing, sun protection, rest periods, schedule strenuous outdoor activities during cooler periods and to provide shaded rest areas.

The DOT-NIR encouraged LGUs and tourism destination managers to monitor local water availability and identify tourism destinations and communities that may be vulnerable to prolonged dry spells or drought.

Tourism partners and other stakeholders can do their part by regularly monitoring official climate forecasts, advisories and updates and promoting responsible water and energy consumption among employees, visitors and local communities, it added.

“All tourism stakeholders are reminded that El Niño conditions may vary across locations and over time. Preparedness measures should therefore be guided by the latest official climate forecasts, local conditions, and advisories issued by competent authorities,” the DOT-NIR said. (PNA)
