Hypebeastâs list, inspired by Switzerlandâs newly redesigned passport, highlights travel documents that stand out for their creativity and unique visual elements. The Philippine passport was recognized for its deep maroon cover and the detailed depiction of the Philippine eagle, a national emblem representing resilience and freedom. The feature emphasized how various countries incorporate cultural identity into their passport designs, placing the Philippines alongside nations known for their aesthetically remarkable travel documents, including Norway, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Finland, New Zealand, Hungary, and Belgium.
The Philippines issues three distinct passport types. The maroon passport is the standard travel document issued to Filipino citizens for personal and business travel. The red passport is used by government officials and employees on official duty. The dark blue passport is reserved for diplomats, Cabinet members, and high-ranking government officials.
Among these, the maroon passport gained international recognition for its elegant and meaningful design, making it a standout in global aesthetics.
While the Philippine passport is admired for its design, its strength in terms of travel access remains a work in progress. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, the Philippines ranks 75th, a slight decline from its 73rd place in 2024. Filipino passport holders currently have visa-free access to 67 countries, offering moderate travel mobility worldwide.
Despite this, the passportâs global recognition reflects the Philippines’ dedication to embedding national identity into official documents.
