The helicopter fleet of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) was further strengthened as the service formally accepted into service five more brand-new S-70i “Black Hawk” utility helicopters during a joint turnover and blessing ceremony at Villamor Air Base Friday.

Also accepted were eight M134-H “Gatling” heavy machine guns which will be used to arm the aircraft.

“This delivery marks the fifth batch, bringing the total 25 units out of the 32 units programmed under the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization initiatives,” the PAF said.

Earlier reports said that these five units were delivered last December.

The PHP32-billion contract for the acquisition for these helicopters was signed on Feb. 22, 2022 by then Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

The ceremony, conducted through the Air Force Systems Engineering and Modernization Office, was graced by acting Department of Budget and Management Secretary Rolando Toledo, who served as guest of honor, along with PAF chief Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura.

“During the event, the aircraft and their armament documents were formally received by Brig. Gen. Moises Micor, Wing Commander of the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing. The new air assets are set to significantly enhance the PAF’s air mobility, operational readiness, and disaster response capabilities,” the PAF said.

Toledo highlighted the strategic importance of modernizing the PAF and said that “a modern, capable, and mission-ready Air Force is no longer optional, it is essential.”

He also emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the PAF remains prepared for evolving security and humanitarian challenges.

The acquisition of these platforms reflects the PAF’s continuous efforts to strengthen mission readiness, support joint and combined operations, and respond effectively to both national security and humanitarian requirements.

Through capability development initiatives under the AFP Modernization Program, the PAF remains committed to building a mission-oriented, capability-driven and values-based force ready to meet the nation’s dynamic needs.
