Fifteen Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Romblon District Jail, in collaboration with local artists from the Pintura Artists of Romblon Province, participated in an art session on Sunday.

The activity forms part of the BJMP’s rehabilitation and reformation program, which aims to promote creativity, self-expression and emotional well-being among PDLs through art-based interventions.

Local artists Hipolito Berano, Camilo Villanueva Jr. and Leo Maduro facilitated the session, teaching basic painting techniques and guiding participants in expressing their thoughts and emotions through visual art.

Jail Inspector Fatima Rabino, acting district jail warden, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, noting that such initiatives help PDLs regain confidence and develop positive outlooks.

“Through art, they rediscover a sense of purpose and realize that positive change is possible even within confinement,” she said.

BJMP Mimaropa spokesperson Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the use of art in rehabilitation is a valuable tool for emotional release and personal growth.

“Art plays a vital role in healing and transformation. It allows PDLs to process their experiences, express their emotions, and rebuild their sense of identity in a positive and productive way,” he added.

The completed artworks will be displayed within the facility as a reflection of the PDLs’ creativity, resilience, and journey toward transformation. (PNA)
