The Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) operating command in Southern Visayas has launched a task force for the sustainable development and long-term protection and conservation of marine resources in Siquijor.

Lt. Junior Grade Rachel Diputado, who heads the Marine Environmental Protection Enforcement and Response Group in the region, said the task force is a collaborative endeavor involving the Coast Guard District Southern Visayas, Siquijor provincial government, and local stakeholders.

“We launched Task Force Yaman Dagat in Siquijor on Monday, following the creation of the Negros Island Region, and especially since Siquijor is one of the tourist spots in the region,” Diputado told the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday.

Present during the launching were Vice Admiral Roy Echeverria, commander of the Marine Environmental Protection Command; Commodore Christopher Auro, head of Coast Guard District Southern Visayas; local government officials; and other stakeholders.

Diputado said the initiative highlights the significance of community participation, guaranteeing that the task force functions not just as a government project but as a joint effort with local partners, particularly the fishing communities.

The program underscores collaborative efforts between the government and local stakeholders to protect and sustainably manage fisheries and marine resources.

The task force has several activities, including the monitoring of marine protected areas, information and education campaigns particularly on waste management, and response techniques and exercises during emergencies.

During the launch, participants from various agencies declared their full support to the task force through the signing of a pledge of commitment. (PNA)
