President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday announced his decision to approve the funding requirements for the rice subsidies and improved medical services for the military personnel.

This, as Marcos received the top officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in a New Year’s call at Malacañan Palace in Manila.

“Beyond duty, we prioritize their daily lives. I have approved a specific budget for rice subsidies and Tertiary Health Care at the AFP Medical Center for advanced medical services and overall wellness support,” Marcos said in a Facebook post.

Presidential Adviser on Police and Military Affairs Secretary Roman Felix, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., and PNP Chief Police Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. graced the New Year’s call at Malacañan.

Also present were Philippine Army commanding general Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, Philippine Air Force commanding general Lt. Gen. Stephen Parreño, and Philippine Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Adm.Toribio Adaci Jr.

Marcos said his administration is committed to promoting the government troops’ welfare, citing the increase in the Department of National Defense’s (DND) budget for 2024.

“With an increased 2024 budget for the DND, we’re dedicated to ensuring the well-being of our uniformed personnel and their families. This commitment is evident in our support for the Revised AFP Modernization Program and the Pension and Gratuity Fund, ensuring financial stability for military and civilian personnel,” he said.

In October last year, Marcos said the government would continue undertaking initiatives to transform the AFP into a “world-class force.”

Marcos, in December last year, also announced the increase in the lifetime monthly gratuity pay of the existing Medal of Valor awardees upon the recommendation of the DND and the AFP.

He also urged the AFP to strengthen its alliances and partnerships with foreign counterparts to boost its defense capabilities. (PNA)
