Around 60 parents and caregivers in the municipalities of Ronda, Moalboal and Alcantara have unlocked a new entrepreneurial skill after attending a series of Bangus Deboning workshops organised by World Vision with technical support from Cebu Technological University (CTU)-Moalboal Campus.

The participants learned the skill of Bangus Deboning which is the process of removing the intermuscular and nuisance bones of bangus or Milkfish by manual method through the use of forceps. Bangus is a popular fish meal in the Philippines and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Boneless bangus is more sellable compared to its unprocessed counterpart.

Each workshop, a technical expert from CTU discussed and demonstrated the proper deboning. The participants also had the chance to try the process themselves during the later part of the activity. It is then concluded with a cook-out where the participants can taste their product.

“This activity will be helpful for families to have another source income especially now that the pandemic has affected the livelihood of many,” shares Rey Angelo Dahonan, World Vision Program Officer.

Each participant can earn from their newly learned skill by selling boneless bangus in their community or by cooking boneless bangus viands.

The workshop was done in three separate dates to manage the number of participants. Each workshop only allowed a maximum of 20 participants. Wearing of facemask and social distancing were also observed during the workshop.
