The provincial government of Pangasinan and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are ramping up efforts to strengthen the local market for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through key initiatives, including the establishment of trade centers and participation in national and international expos.

DTI Ilocos Region Assistant Director Natalia Dalaten said a Pangasinan Trade and Investment Center will be established this year, backed by a newly approved ordinance.

“First, the establishment of our Pangasinan Trade and Investment Center. We already have an ordinance there and we are sure that within the year, our Pangasinan Trade and Investment Center will be established,” Dalaten said in an interview on Monday.

At the same time, the province has institutionalized its participation in major trade events such as the International Food Expo and Manila FAME, the Philippines’ premier trade show for quality home, fashion, and lifestyle products.

“Second, there is already an ordinance on the institutionalization of the participation of the province of Pangasinan in the International Food Expo and Manila Fame,” she added.

From the previous International Food Expo alone, around PHP79.57 million in sales were generated, Dalaten said, noting the positive impact on job creation and international exposure for local products.

The provincial government covers participation fees, making it easier for MSMEs to tap into the global market.

“And of course, if there is production, we can create employment for our countrymen, wherever our MSMEs are. So, it is a very good opportunity for our MSMEs that they will be exposed to the international market for free because the participation fee was paid by the provincial government,” she said.

Despite global trade challenges, including higher tariffs imposed by the United States, Dalaten noted that the Philippines remains competitive with relatively lower tariffs compared to other countries.

Governor Ramon Guico III, in his recent State of the Province Address, emphasized strengthening the domestic market in response to global uncertainties.

A new development in Manaoag, the province’s top tourist destination, will feature expanded facilities such as parking spaces, food stalls and a trade center showcasing local products.

“We will also be developing Manaoag because that is the number one tourist spot, I would say, in terms of visitors count in the province of Pangasinan. We will open Manaoag to pave the way for a new development,” he said.

He added that the development will serve not only the tourists, but also the residents for their livelihood or job or employment. (PNA)
