A new learning facility worth PHP12.9 million has been established to provide a permanent space for out-of-school youth and adults who want to pursue their studies through the alternative learning system (ALS).

Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the facility is an upskilling initiative promoted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. regarding education.

“With this ALS facility, we can accommodate even walk-in learners. Traditionally, ALS teachers would visit learners’ homes, but this new center offers a spacious and convenient environment for them,” he said in an interview.

Angara led the inauguration and blessing of the Alternative Learning System Community Learning Center located at Tabaco National High School in Tabaco City, Albay.

The department is expanding the ALS program for learners of all ages, Angara said. Those enrolled under the program can study at their own pace and convenience.

Salome Barcenas, a Grade 11 learner and barangay captain in Tabiguian, Tabaco City, said the program gives them a second chance to complete their studies.

“At our age, we cannot start from the beginning. By passing the assessment and examination in the ALS program, we can pursue college. This is a big help for us,” she said.

She decided to join the program after all six of her children graduated from college and encouraged her to pursue her own education.

“My dreams were initially set aside as I prioritized my children’s needs. Now that they are all professionals, it’s time for me to fulfill my own dream. I am currently in Grade 11, and I am very happy with my achievement,” she added.

Barcenas is determined to continue her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education or a course related to business management.

In Tabaco City, more than 470 learners will benefit from the new facility.

The building is a two-story structure with a total floor area of 371.25 square meters. (PNA)
