“Pinoy Big Brother” (PBB) teen housemates are being called out online for wrongly naming the three martyred priests known as the “GomBurZa” in a viral clip released from an episode of the reality show Pinoy Big Brother.

On April 10, PBB’s official Youtube Channel posted a 14-minute video episode of the recently held quiz for the housemates.

The trivia quiz went to challenge the teen housemates on their knowledge about Philippine History through a series of questions from Host Robi Domingo such as “Sa anong bansag mas kilala ang Filipino General na si Gregorio Del Pilar”, and “si Dr. Jose Rizal ay kilala sa kaniyang palayaw na?.

As the Philippine history quiz went for the higher rounds, teen housemates were continuously asked questions. But one particular round of the quiz went trending online after the teen participants Kai Espenido and Gabb Skribikin who the round players were asked a trivia question about the three priests executed by garotte during the Spanish occupation.

“Ang tatlong Catholic priests na sina Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, Jacinto Zamora na hinatulan ng kamatayan noong panahon ng Kastila ay mas kilala sa tawag na…?” the host asked.

Kai who first pressed the buzzer tried to answer the question with “JosMar” and “MarJo” after having the host repeat the names of the three priests mentioned and later took it back.

Meanwhile, Gabb who raise her hand for a “steal” answered the question with “MaJoHa” —one housemate on the bench mouthing the correct term “GomBurZa” but both players failed to answer it right with the term they make up from the priests’ first names.

Netizens didn’t find the viral clip amusing and trended #GomBurZa online on Twitter Philippines and other social media platforms reacting to the contestants answers and mentioning the country’s present education system.

“This is quite depressing. How come these two kids do not know about GomBurZa? This is a question that even a third-grader can answer. This was taught in grade school,” a netizen posted.

“How come these teen hms do not know the martyrdom of the three priests? GomBurZa didn’t die for this shit. This is a question that even a 4th grader can answer. pakaulaw lang, na broadcast pa sa national TV. I will die because of embarrassment,” said another.

“Saw this pic here on Twitter of GomBurZa. This is a reflection on how kids want to have their own Youtube channels and have 1 million followers on Tiktok but forget the people who sacrificed their lives so that we can have our freedom,” also a concerned netizen posted.

Historian Kristoffer Pasion also reacted to the viral ‘PBB’ quiz episode saying, “150 years after the martyrdom of the GOMBURZA, they have been renamed as MAJOHA. We have so much work to do. It’s not just Martial Law. If we let things be w/ people never making sense of the whys of history, some troll will fill the gap for them.”

Amidst the viral “GomBurza turned MaJoHa” issue, The Philippine Social Conservative Movement on a Facebook Post shared, “Seeing the ignorance of the youth to the even most basic nuggets of our history as exemplified in this segment could not help but bring to tears the concern of what will the next generation of Filipinos will be?”

“Are we doomed to repeat the same mistakes of our ancestors?”, concerning the segment where the two teen contestants mistakenly answered the wrong collective term for the three Filipino Catholic Priests.

Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora known for their collective name ‘GomBurZa’ are the three martyr catholic priests who were executed by the Spanish colonial authorities in Bagumbayan, Philippines using a garrote on February 17, 1872, in connection with the 1872 Cavite Mutiny.

On the other hand, teen housemates’ incorrect answers to some historical questions also began trending online including the “J. Rizal” on who the National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal is also known for and the “SLEX” a teen housemate answered on which bridge in the Philippines is considered the longest.
