The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar is all set to welcome about 400 national competitors, coaches, and guests to the week-long National Surfing Competition.

Topnotch surfing coaches are expected to arrive in Borongan, including national trainer John Matthew Carby, who confirmed his assistance to enrich the surfing skills of young surfing enthusiasts, city information officer Rupert Ambil, the Surf City main organizer, said on Tuesday.

The first National Surfing Competition in the country, to be held from November 26 to December 3, will have the most attractive prize and lengthy track, making it a good opportunity for both professional and recreational surfers to compete and enjoy, Ambil said.

“The higher the prize, the more points an athlete gains, that could win him more points to be enlisted in the national team. We are also hoping to train more local young surfers through this event,” he said.

Ambil noted that surfing is also expected to attract guests and tourists to the city, which would be advantageous to local producers in marketing their products.

Dubbed Surf in the City, the sports festival will gather the best surfers from all over the country as they compete for the third leg of a national surfing competition sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association, the national sports body for surfing in the country.

The first leg of the competition was held in Siargao while the second was in Baler, Aurora.

Surf in the City is jointly organized by the Borongan city government headed by Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda, the provincial government of Eastern Samar headed by Governor Ben P. Evardone, and the Office of Rep. Maria Fe Abunda of Eastern Samar’s lone legislative district. (PNA)
