The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) is implementing a water source security roadmap to ensure the sustainable development and management of water resources in the country.

In a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing over PTV-4 on Tuesday, MWSS division manager Patrick Dizon said the water source security roadmap contains three pillars — reengineering of existing water supply, short-term water sources projects, and long-term water sources projects.

Dizon said the reengineering aspect is expected to be completed by 2025.

“Sa ngayon po, iyong mga existing na facilities po natin, iyong mga aqueducts and tunnels po natin ay 1930s pa po, 1940’s pa po ito na-construct so kailangan na po natin itong i-repair. So, ongoing po iyong rehabilitation po namin nito at hopefully ay matapos namin by next year po iyong implementation nito (Currently our existing facilities, such as aqueducts and tunnels, have been built since 1930s or 1940s so we need to repair them. So, the rehabilitation is ongoing and hopefully we will be able to finish implementation next year),” he said.

As for the short-term water sources projects, he said the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project is targeted to be completed by August and will operate by 2025.

Once completed, the Wawa project can supply 518 million liters per day (MLD) of raw water to more than 500,000 households in the East Zone concession area.

For the long-term water sources projects, Dizon said the Kaliwa Dam Project would be completed by 2027.

“Sa ngayon po is ongoing na po iyong ating pag-i-implement or pag-construct po ng mga dams na ito (Currently, the implementation or construction of these dams is ongoing),” he said.

Kaliwa Dam Project is a new water source to meet the increasing demand of the people of Metro Manila, Rizal and Quezon (17.46 million people or 3.49 million households) by building another dam and to reduce total dependence on the Angat Dam.
