The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) in Bicol has launched a series of free activities aimed at promoting the region’s rich history, culture, and artistry as part of Museums and Galleries Month.

Jesseshan Aycocho, NMP-Bicol museum information officer, said the event is themed “Resilient Museums and Galleries: Educating for Preparedness and Recovery.”

The theme is particularly timely, she said, as one of the activities involves discussing the history of the Cagsawa Ruins, which symbolizes the resilience of Bicolanos.

Over 60 participants, including representatives from the local government of Daraga, certified local tour guides, and selected students, attended the opening on Monday.

The public is invited to participate in various free activities throughout the month, including discussions on Bikol literature and heritage, a scientific illustration workshop, creativity on abaca canvas, and a painting workshop.

Aycocho urged the youth to engage with their cultural heritage, adding this generation is becoming increasingly disconnected from the region’s stories.

“Cultural heritage is about understanding our identity,” she said, comparing it to “a child seeking knowledge about their parents’ story to understand where they come from.”

To address this, NMP-Bicol has visited 80 schools since 2023 to educate young people about their heritage.

Throughout the month, additional activities are scheduled, including the Scientific Illustration Workshop on Oct. 11-12, the Arte Bikolnon: Creativity on Abaca Canvas on Oct. 20, and Guhit Saribuhay: Painting Life and Heritage on Oct. 30. (PNA)
