The Surigao City government and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) have partnered to enhance the promotion and enforcement of safety protocols in maritime travel in the city and its neighboring areas.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Surigao City Information Office noted the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II and MARINA-13 (Caraga) Regional Director Ninfa Martinez on Tuesday for the initiative.

“Mayor Dumlao underscored the importance of the campaign, noting Surigao City’s reliance on maritime transport due to its numerous island barangays,” the information office said.

The MOU signing coincided with MARINA-13’s Maritime Safety Culture Awareness Campaign Caravan, witnessed by the 54 barangay captains from the city.

Thousands of Surigao City residents live in 21 island barangays and utilize sea transport daily, especially when they intend to go to the city proper.

The forged collaboration will focus on strengthening the enforcement of existing safety protocols to address emerging challenges in maritime safety.

The protocols include regular inspections of vessels, training for crew members, and public awareness campaigns to educate passengers on safety practices. (PNA)
