Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Acting Chair Carlo Dimayuga III inspected on Monday several locations vital in flood control and management across the region a day after Typhoon Karding (international name Noru) hit Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Dimayuga inspected C-6 Taguig Pumping Station, Effective Flood Control Operation System (EFCOS) in Pasig, and the proposed location for a pumping station to be built at Tatalon/Araneta in Quezon City.

Floodgates operated as designed and diversion of floodwater in Laguna Lake helped in its immediate subsiding, Dimayuga said.

“Water from Marikina River didn’t reach its spilling level because it was diverted to Laguna lake for temporary storage and then released to Manila Bay,” Dimayuga said.

“Meanwhile, all the eight gates in EFCOS were operational and released 2400 cubic meters of water per second, all of which were released to Laguna lake. This benefited residents of Marikina,” he added.

Dimayuga also inspected Tatalon/Araneta where there is a proposed pumping station that can address the frequent flooding in the area.

“We are modernizing and adding pumping stations as part of our flood mitigation interventions under the Metro Manila Flood Management Project aimed at improving flood management in NCR,” he said.

The MMDA hoisted its red alert status since Sunday and has created Task Force Karding as it braced for the effects of the typhoon which may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Monday night.

The agency has deployed its frontline personnel and emergency vehicles to assist those who were affected and conducted water rescue. (PNA)
