The municipality of Opol in Misamis Oriental will begin a PHP731.5 million upgrade of its fish port next year, a local official announced Friday.

In a statement, Mayor Jayfrancis Bago said the renovated facility would be Northern Mindanao’s first modern fish port, featuring a three-story building with advanced equipment.

“The project will also feature the expansion of the berthing area, restoration of old structures, and overall port modernization to accommodate larger vessels and improve cargo handling operations,” he said.

The upgrade is a joint venture between Khan Kon Chi Construction Development Corp. and Nioprovider Corp. Funding will come from the congressional offices of Misamis Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny Vincente Emano and Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos.

Meanwhile, Bago serves as co-chair of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Fishery Management Area 9 in Northern Mindanao, alongside BFAR Regional Director Edward Yasay, who acts as the overall chairman.

Opol is considered the fishing capital of Misamis Oriental, with its fish port serving as a crucial hub for the region’s fisheries sector. (PNA)
