The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) announced Monday that talks on digital cooperation with Qatar have advanced, exploring opportunities to boost innovation, tech talent and digital solutions for the region’s growth.

In a statement, MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno said his recent meeting with H.E. Mohammed bin Ali bin Mohammed Al Mannai, from Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), highlighted Mindanao’s priorities and strengths in new partnerships, underscoring the region’s readiness for digital transformation.

The dialogue was part of the three-day Mindanao Investment Mission to Qatar, highlighting investment prospects in information and Communication Technology (ICT), digital capacity-building, and innovation pathways to boost Mindanao’s inclusive, innovation-driven growth.

Magno said strengthening PH–Qatar digital ties supports long-term goals: Qatar’s shift to a knowledge-based economy and the Philippines’ effort to modernize government, create digital jobs and foster resilient innovation ecosystems.

“These synergies are essential to building a better Mindanao — one that is digitally empowered, economically competitive, and better positioned to harness emerging technologies for inclusive and sustainable development,” he said.

Both sides emphasized cooperation in ICT investments, research, and tech transfer to boost the Philippines’ role in the digital value chain. They discussed cross-border startup collaboration for Filipino and Qatari innovators to develop solutions across domains.

Qatar, renowned for its advancements in smart city, cybersecurity, and AI applications, expressed willingness to collaborate with Philippine stakeholders — including industries and institutions in Mindanao — on specific digital projects.

Magno underscored President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s priority of strengthening the country’s digital workforce and bolstering AI readiness.

“Such efforts offer meaningful opportunities for institutions and communities across Mindanao as they work to strengthen digital skills and integrate innovation into local development initiatives,” he said. (PNA)
