Miss Universe Philippines 2023, Michelle Dee, went on a meaningful journey to Buscalan to meet the legendary Apo Whang-Od, the famous tattoo artist and cultural icon of the Butbut tribe in Kalinga Province.

Sharing her experience on Instagram, Michelle delighted her followers with a video documenting her tattoo session with Apo Whang-Od. “Finally!” exclaimed Michelle in her caption, expressing her long-awaited moment with gratitude.

She extended her heartfelt thanks to her team for making the unforgettable trip possible. “Grateful for my team @wearepersonifi for making this trip with me. What an amazing way to start the month of May and my final days as your reigning queen. (more to come),” she shared.

Michelle’s connection with Apo Whang-Od runs deep. During the Miss Universe pageant last November, Michelle wore a gown inspired by Apo Whang-Od’s tattoo art. She described the gown as a tribute to a legendary Filipina who symbolizes timeless beauty and inclusivity. Her gown was crafted by designer @markbumgarner, with every stitch dedicated to showcasing Filipino heritage.

Apo Whang-Od, revered as the oldest mambabatok of the Butbut tribe, continues to captivate hearts with her artistry and cultural significance.

As Michelle prepares to pass on her Miss Universe Philippines crown, she looks forward to the upcoming coronation night on May 22 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, where she will officially hand over the reins to her successor.
