The Martial law film “Katips” takes the spotlight with a total of seven awards won at the recently concluded 70th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) awards night on July 30.

Katips received fifteen nods from the award-giving body and bagged seven wins, including Best Picture Award, Best Musical Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Song. Vince Tañada, the film’s writer and director, received the Best Director and Best Actor Awards, while Johnrey Rivas took the Best Supporting Actor prize.

The musical drama by Philstagers Films was adapted from the 2016 stage musical Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero, which follows the story of a group of student activists and their fight for their ideals during the time of Martial Law. The film’s cast includes Vince Tañada, Jerome Ponce, Nicole Laurel, Lou Veloso, Dexter Doria, Johnrey Rivas and Mon Confiado to name a few.

The film was supposed to air in June but was moved to August 3 and is set to screen in 51 SM Cinemas nationwide. The official trailer of Katips was posted by Director Vince Tañada on his official Facebook account and is now available on Philstagers Films’ social media accounts.

Besides Katips, MMFF 2021 big winner “Big Night” also scored two wins, with Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Janice de Belen.

Media executive and actress Charo Santos-Concio bagged the Best Actress Award for her portrayal in the film “Kun Maupay Man It Panahon.” Senator Imee Romualdez Marcos, on the other hand, was hailed as the Exemplary Awardee in Public Service.

Meanwhile, two special awards were presented to the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Miss Nora Aunor. She received the Susan Roces Celebrity Award and Ang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining.

FAMAS announced the winners on their official Facebook page, where they posted a series of pictures taken during the awards ceremony.

FAMAS is the grandest and most prestigious award-giving body recognizing cinema excellence. In 2022, FAMAS celebrated their 70th Annual Awards Night as part of their Platinum Anniversary at the Manila Metropolitan Theater.
