The aviation industry, one of the sectors critical to Japan’s economies’ survival, was badly hit as the deadly waves of the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed travel and tourism, however, the industry is looking for a boost to reclaim its former status.

Among the numerous attempts by the aviation industry to achieve progress, Peach Aviation Limited, an Osaka-based budget airline, took the most unique and bizarre approach, which is letting a ‘gachapon’ capsule decide your travel destination.

A gachapon vending machine, which typically dispenses tiny toys rather than getaway destinations, made its debut in Osaka in mid-August and has been garnering popularity, contrary to Peach’s expectations.

Each capsule costs 5,000 YEN or roughly PHP 2,200 and carries a code that leads to an undisclosed random location in Japan. Redeem the code for a certain amount of mileage points on the Peach airline website.

People receive 6000 points for purchasing a capsule, with each point equal to one Yen. As a result, interested visitors and travelers receive a 1000 Yen discount on their flight.

In Osaka, the gachapon machine in the Shinsaibashi Parco department store provides 13 routes from Kansai Airport, while the Shibuya machine offers 11 routes from Narita Airport.

According to official data, the airline has sold around 3,000 capsules in the last several months, with a daily sales rate of 150 capsules. Additionally, Peach stated that the gachapon machine in Shibuya will be operational until the end of December.
