Japan has committed a total funding of PHP150 million for a scholarship grant for qualified young Filipino government employees, as part of its Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).

In a Facebook post on Monday, the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines said Ambassador Endo Kazuya and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo signed and exchanged notes for the project on April 25.

“The grant will provide JPY 389 million (approximately PHP 150 million) to fund the master’s degree studies of 20 young Filipino government employees starting Academic Year 2026-2027 at leading universities in Japan,” the post read.

The amount is based on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) PHP-JPY (Japanese yen) exchange rate of .3852, as per the 2025 March average.

The scholarship provides skills enhancement to young leaders from target countries, including the Philippines.

The embassy said that since its launch in 2002, the JDS program has already helped 459 Filipino government employees further their education and expertise.

It added the ongoing support highlights Japan’s commitment to the professional growth of Filipino leaders and the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said JDS fellows are expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of their country by actively engaging in policy formulation and implementation of social and economic development policies upon completion of the program and return to their home country.

Moreover, through the program, young leaders are also able to understand Japanese society, learn about common interests, and work towards common goals.
