With its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and beautiful sunsets, Indonesia remains a gem for tourists looking for magnificent vacation spots. And now, the country is offering you a chance to experience its beautiful places while you work.

Indonesia announced its plans to offer a special working visa to allow digital nomads to stay in Bali for free. The visa, called the “Digital Nomad Visa” aims to incentivize foreign remote workers to reside in the country’s popular tourist destination.

The Digital Nomad Visa will have a 5-year validity term. Foreigners can live in Bali tax-free, provided their income is derived from companies outside Indonesia.

The move to offer this new visa is geared toward creating an impact on the local economy of Bali and providing more jobs for the people.

In a press briefing, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said that the visa implementation also covers their plan to slowly divert away from sunseeker tourism to a more sustainable three S model of serenity, spirituality, and sustainability. The nation is planning to highlight its spiritual retreats in places like Bali, on top of its famous beaches and bars.

With Bali coming on “top of mind” for digital nomads when asked for a dream remote work destination, Uno expects that streamlined visa processing and more flights will entice the remote workers into longer stays in their country.

Once Indonesia’s new digital nomad visa is completed, this will become the longest digital nomad visa available to date, with countries like Portugal offering a 1-year validity.

The plans for the visa have been in the works since 2021 but were derailed due to restrictions caused by COVID-19.

As of the moment, digital nomads interested in working in Bali can apply for temporary visas like Visa on Arrival (VoA)with 30-day validity, a tourist visa renewable for 60 days, and a business visa that is extendable to 180 days.
