The Iloilo City government will continue its energy conservation program after saving about PHP200,000 a month on electricity costs since the measures were implemented in March, Mayor Raisa Treñas said Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Treñas said the city will continue implementing energy-saving initiatives under Executive Order No. 030, which established the city’s Energy Conservation Protocol, including a four-day workweek and other efficiency measures.
The program includes regulating the use of air-conditioning units, reducing electricity consumption during lunch breaks, encouraging virtual meetings, and optimizing the use of government vehicles.
Treñas said the city is finalizing plans for the installation of solar power systems in priority government offices and evacuation centers using a PHP25 million allocation.
Meanwhile, the city is encouraging homeowners to install solar panels and avail themselves of a 20% real property tax discount.
Treñas said the city government is working with the City Council to review and update the 2009 ordinance granting the incentive to simplify the application process and encourage more residents to adopt renewable energy.
“We discussed with the council who can amend and review the ordinance to make it easier for our people to apply for renewable energy or the solar energy system,” she said. (PNA)
