The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office here is supporting efforts to establish Mount Huraw in San Jose de Buan, Samar, as a recognized mountaineering and ecotourism destination.

The support, according to DOT on Monday, is crucial since more mountaineers have been visiting the area known as the highest peak of Samar Island, with an elevation of 890 meters above sea level.

“The tourism development workshop will play a vital role in supporting San Jose de Buan’s efforts to establish the site as a destination, boosting local pride, livelihood opportunities, and sustainable tourism development in Eastern Visayas,” the DOT regional office said in a statement.

The DOT, in collaboration with Bukid Outdoor Shop led by Jason Garrido, successfully conducted a six-day capacity-building workshop in San Jose de Buan from Sept. 15 to 20, 2025.

The weeklong workshop was divided into two key components designed to equip participants with both organizational and practical tourism skills.

The first three days focused on an organizational development workshop, bringing together local mountain guides, community leaders, and tourism stakeholders. Participants worked on improving collaboration, strengthening organizational structures, and adopting sustainable tourism practices to ensure long-term benefits for the community.

This was followed by a scriptwriting and tour packaging workshop, where participants learned how to craft compelling tour narratives and design engaging yet sustainable tourism packages.

The sessions emphasized balancing authenticity, cultural preservation, and adventure-based experiences.

“Participants actively engaged in hands-on activities and brainstorming sessions, highlighting Samar’s cultural and natural treasures while developing innovative approaches to visitor engagement,” the DOT said.

Earlier this year, the DOT and partners held various meetings with the local government unit and the Philippine Army as well as trainings to further equip local guides on responsible and professional mountain guiding.
