The Department of Tourism (DOT) 10 (Northern Mindanao) has acknowledged the vital contribution of Indigenous Peoples (IP) to the ecotourism industry, recognizing them as integral to protecting nature, especially in Misamis Oriental province.

In an interview on Monday, DOT-10 Director Marie Elaine Unchuan said IPs are among the communities that helped government and tourism initiatives thrive in the province and the region, serving as watchers and residents in the area.

“We still have vast forests in Misamis Oriental that are well protected by our eco-warriors, composed of volunteers from our IPs or Lumad communities. These areas, including the Mount Balatukan range stretching from Balingasag to Gingoog City, are vital to our conservation and tourism efforts,” she said.

Unchuan credited the success of the recent mountaineering activity in Mt. Balatukan from July 4 to 6 to the guidance of IP residents and the assistance of local government units.

Dubbed “Discover the Peak of Mt. Balatukan,” the climb is part of the Climb NorthMin Mountain Tourism Campaign, a partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Porters and forest guides from the villages of Kalagonoy and Bantaawan played a key role in the climb, assisting participants and ensuring safety along the route. Their familiarity with the terrain and swift coordination were crucial in managing the event.

Meanwhile, the provincial government of Misamis Oriental will host the first-ever “K-Festival” or Korean Festival this September, aimed at further boosting the province’s tourism potential.

Governor Juliette Uy said the event will feature video presentations highlighting the province’s natural and cultural attractions. (PNA)
