The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Saturday assured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) anew of the government’s full backing as it honors the sector on the 30th Migrant Workers’ Day.

“We are here to support those dreams in far-off lands and seas, to assure you that you are not alone, that the whole nation and the government is here with you all the way — the ‘Bayanihan’ spirit that is deeply rooted in us, Filipinos,” DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said in a statement.

The DMW, he said, would also champion a “rights-based approach” in ensuring the protection of OFWs through its various programs.

He noted that under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the government has further intensified the campaign against illegal recruitment and strengthened bilateral partnerships with stakeholders and host countries.

The DMW, he added, continues to provide welfare support to OFWs through the AKSYON Fund and its comprehensive full-cycle reintegration programs.

“With the guidance and support of our President Marcos Jr., the DMW will tirelessly work toward creating an environment where every Filipino worker is valued, respected, and given opportunities for growth and development,” he said.

Held every June 7, Migrant Workers’ Day was established under the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995 (Republic Act 8042) to recognize the invaluable contributions of OFWs.

The DMW said this year’s celebration would culminate with the groundbreaking of the new DMW Central Office, the signing of a joint memorandum circular establishing the National Reintegration Network, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

In a separate statement on Saturday, the CHR underscored the need for “deliberate and sustained efforts” to improve the quality of life of OFWs, including their families in the Philippines.

This support, it said, should cover accessible and comprehensive services for OFWs, including legal assistance, reintegration support, and protection mechanisms.

“CHR stresses that the respect and protection of human rights must extend beyond national borders,” it said.

“We commend the efforts of relevant government agencies to safeguard the rights of Filipinos overseas. As we honor OFWs as modern-day heroes, it is imperative for the State to take concrete and sustained actions to uphold their dignity and that of their families,” it added. (PNA)
