The Philippine government joined the world in celebrating the 2023 Maritime Day and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting marine pollution.

“The Philippines proudly reaffirms its steadfast commitment to address marine pollution and foster a greener shipping industry. We recognize that the preservation of our oceans transcends borders and demands collective action of maritime industries,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said in a statement Thursday.

As an archipelagic nation, Manalo said the Philippines bears a shared responsibility to ensure the oceans’ vitality for present and future generations.

“Guided by the principles of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), we actively engage in collaboration initiatives to reduce emissions, adopt cleaner technologies, and implement sustainable practices that harmonize economic progress with environmental well-being,” he said.

He then called on other states to amplify efforts in protecting marine ecosystems.

The 2023 Maritime Day coincides with the 50th anniversary of the MARPOL, an agreement that deals with the prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

The United Nations said the world continues to rely on a safe, secure and efficient international shipping industry highlighting the need to promote sustainable maritime development. (PNA)
