As the Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino (Filipino Food Month) nears its end, the rich local flavors and traditions of the Davao Region, alongside the significant contributions of its farmers, took center stage here Friday.

Carrying the theme “Sarap ng Pagkaing Pilipino: Yaman ng ating Kasaysayan, Kultura, at Pagkatao” (Savory Filipino Food: A Treasure of History, Culture and Identity), an ongoing food exhibit highlights the region’s unique gastronomy, which often features locally sourced and previously underutilized ingredients that are now being revitalized.

“From the majestic mountains to the bountiful coasts, Davao’s diverse flavors truly reflect the heart and soul of its people — resilient, creative, and deeply connected to the land that sustains them,” Department of Tourism in Davao Region (DOT-11) Director Tanya Rabat-Tan said in an interview.

Tan said the event showcases the entire journey of the region’s food, from the dedicated farmers who meticulously plant and harvest the ingredients to the talented chefs who skillfully transform the natural gifts into culinary masterpieces.

“We proudly honor our farmers, the true stewards of our land, who diligently preserve heirloom crops and are rediscovering forgotten produce. We also pay homage to our cooks and chefs, the storytellers who weave together history and innovation into every single dish, ultimately shaping the unique cuisine of Davao,” she added.

Zabdiel Zacarias, Department of Agriculture-11 Technical Director, underscored the crucial role of agriculture in shaping the nation’s heritage, identity and daily lives.

“As we approach the culmination of this meaningful celebration, may we all renew our unwavering commitment to support our hardworking farming and fishing communities, who form the very heart of our nation’s food system, while simultaneously uplifting the promising future of our region’s agricultural strengths,” he said.

Zacarias called upon all stakeholders to actively champion local produce, promote sustainable agricultural practices and proudly uphold Filipino food as a powerful symbol of resilience and national pride. (PNA)
